Life Supported (salamanders)

Pyrography drawing and oil on wood.

Flora and fauna that play a critical role in the health of our ecosystem (and therefore our health) are directly supported by trees that provide them with habitat and sustenance. The creatures on this work on a slab of local wood are rendered in two ways, each representing a percent of Pittsburgh’s tree landscape:

  • The roughly 41% rendered fully in color represent our current tree canopy
  • The remaining 59% rendered with a pyrography pen (which burns a line into wood) represents the portion of Pittsburgh that has no trees and therefore cannot support these native species
